With the end of the plastic straw, restaurateurs need to find an alternative that is both sustainable and easy to use. The PAIO brand has the best idea yet.

"Drinking straws" are simply part of it
Since July 2021, disposable plastic tableware of all kinds has been banned in the European Union. This also includes plastic drinking straws, which have been used millions of times a day up to now and end up in the trash after use. While classic disposable tableware is primarily made for convenience, drinking straws have a completely different cultural background.
Meaning: Whether in cocktails, long drinks or in the lemonade bottle - for many the
"Straw" just goes with it.

Many alternatives are unpopular in the gastronomy sector
There are many alternatives, but especially for restaurateurs the change poses problems. Permanently usable drinking straws made of glass or steel are not only very cleaning-intensive, but also unpleasant to use with hot or very cold drinks. In the worst case, glass drinking straws can break in the mouth. Straws made of paper or durum wheat semolina are just as easy to use as those made of plastic, but they soften quickly and impair the taste of the drink.

The solution: drinking straws made from natural reed
North German entrepreneur Tom Hiss, whose family business Hiss Reet has been harvesting and selling reeds for decades, has created an innovative alternative with the PAIO brand, which is likely to be a hit especially in the more upscale gastronomy: A tasteless, stable, 100% sustainable and naturally compostable drinking straw made of reed, which can even be reused many times if necessary.

Reed is the drinking straw of nature
The straws are selected from naturally grown reeds and processed exclusively with water, air and heat to meet all food standards. The ingenious thing about it: While the PAIO drinking straws become completely tasteless through the processing, the natural properties of the plant (hydrophobicity, stability) remain intact. The result virtually invites you to drink, because the good-looking reed tubes evoke a real beach feeling.

Quote from the founder and owner
"PAIO is intended to convey the message that sustainability and resource conservation do not have to mean doing without at the same time," says Tom Hiss, founder and owner of PAIO.
"PAIO offers a drinking experience without limitations. On the contrary: it is fun, and the good
Conscience comes on top.“

Large selection for the gastronomy
Also important for restaurateurs: Unlike other start-ups for natural drinking straw alternatives (e.g. made of straw or bamboo), PAIO is backed by an experienced, professionally positioned company from Germany. This means that you can rely on consistent product quality and delivery capability. In addition, PAIO also offers a whole range of standardized lengths and diameters - and thus always the perfectly fitting drinking straw for high bottles, low glasses, creamy or fruit-flavored drinks and much more.

If you want, you can reuse PAIO
Another environmentally friendly feature of PAIO: the naturally waterproof reed stalks are also suitable for the dishwasher. If necessary, they can be washed and reused many times after use before composting naturally after disposal.

Many times sustainable - simply great
The sustainability of reed as a raw material is undisputed and even goes further than one would sufficiently assume. The renunciation of plastic - or questionably produced, so-called bioplastics - is the main reason. But even the growth of the plant has a positive effect on the climate. On the one hand, the plants bind CO2 from the air, and on the other, the commercial use of reeds prevents the draining of marshes, which in turn act as large natural CO2 reservoirs. The reusability and natural compostability are further, self-evident contributions of PAIO to nature conservation.

About Hiss Reet
Hiss Reet stands for northern German lifestyle based on renewable raw materials. Starting out as a supplier of thatch, the company now markets many sensible alternatives that rely on reed as a natural resource. These include natural building materials, acoustic absorbers, straw screens and garden products. Since 2020, Hiss Reet entered the development and production of PAIO drinking straws made of reed.
